Preparation for IVF Using a Gestational Carrier

Gestational Carrier - Main Page

The following steps should be completed prior to beginning your Gestational Carrier Cycle (if using your own eggs):

1. Fertility evaluation: The fertility evaluation is performed by your Reproductive Endocrinologist. It will evaluate the capacity of your ovaries to produce eggs, as well as that of your partner to fertilize the eggs. Some patients will be using donor sperm and will not require the male evaluation. The fertility evaluation consists of:

  • History and physical examination
  • Ultrasound to assess ovarian appearance
  • Semen analysis
  • Hormone levels
  • Infectious disease screening for both partners as required by federal law.

2. If using an egg Donor, either known or through an agency, the donor will be screened by your physician to ensure compliance with federal law. They will also require psychological evaluation. If using an agency you will be required to enter contract with them, if private donation proof of legal agreement is needed.

3. Primary care physician evaluation:  You should have a visit with you primary care specialist to screen for hypertension, heart disease and general medical risks. Routine health screening assessments, such as a mammogram and Pap smear, should be performed with your primary care physician and the results faxed to the Third Party Program at (650) 725 4463.

4. Psychological Consultation:  A counseling session is required for every oocyte recipient. Counseling can be valuable in preparing you for the emotional issues that sometimes arise during treatment, pregnancy and during the life of the child. We have a counselor on-site who can assist you with this requirement.

5. Legal Consultation:  A legal consultation for advice on the current legal status of Gestational Carrier is required for every intended parent. In this consultation we recommend that you discuss the protections and responsibilities that you and the carrier have under California law.

6. Insurance for Gestational Carrier:  If you are using a private Carrier you are required to arrange for medical insurance for her cycle and pregnancy. Most agencies will work with you to arrange for this.
